How to eat healthy when eating out?

Eating out can be a real challenge when it comes to healthy eating. But you don't have to give up on your goals—and you certainly don't have to feel guilty about enjoying yourself. Here are some tips for making the most of your next restaurant experience:

Base your meals around a good serving of protein with loads of non-starchy vegetables: This is one of the most important things you can do when eating out. You want to fill up on high-protein foods like chicken, fish and beans, which will help keep you feeling satisfied and prevent overeating later on.

Watch your portions: When eating out, it's easy to overdo it—especially if you're not paying attention! So make sure to watch how much food is going into your plate and try not to go overboard by loading up on sides or extras that are high in fat and calories. Avoid going out feeling ravenous, this will tempt you to have the more unhealthier calorie dense options on the menu, it can help sometimes to have a small snack before you head out like a protein shake with water with a handful of nuts. 

However, always remember, one meal will not ruin your progress, it's what you do most of the time that counts, not what you do sometimes.

Balance is key, enjoy meals without guilt: It's ok if you're not perfect all the time—no one is! And while healthy eating should be at the forefront of every decision you make throughout your day, you don't have to be on point 100% of the time. It's important to include and enjoy those 'soul foods' on occasion! Eat well 80% of the time and you are heading in the right direction.
